Combat Stress in 5 Easy Ways
Combat Stress In 5 Easy Ways
Stress is a normal process of life.
It’s natural and sometimes it’s important that we do have some external pressures. Healthy stress gives a boost to two of our natural hormones – adrenaline and cortisol and this can be harnessed to our advantage. It means we can work longer hours on less sleep to achieve a short term goal, like finishing an assignment, preparing for an exam or meeting a work deadline. But constant stress is a disadvantage. Our body’s reaction, whether the stress is real or perceived, is called the ‘fight-or-flight’ response. Sustained stress can be damaging and there’s a long list of the physical signs of stress. You can reduce the stress cycle by adopting simple and easy routines. These are just a few.
- Exercise
Getting physical is great for mental stress. Increase your heart rate for 20 minutes at least three times per week.
- Calming down
What relaxes you? A stroll at sunrise? Reading a book? Cooking? Listening to sounds of nature or relatively slow music? Think about what’s best for you and take the time to unwind.
- Energy boosting foods
Your diet is always important, but because stress may increase appetite swings, with the tendency to crave fatty or sweet foods, ensure you’re eating ample amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables. Keep sipping from your bottle of water. Limiting caffeine intake is also important.
- Meditation or mindfulness are positive relievers
These can be very different for each person. Start simply, by being fully present and aware with your activities. Take a quiet moment to calm the monkey mind and stop that mental chatter.
- Maintain your social connections
Spend time with loved ones – friends or family – and make sure there’s fun and laughter!
Accept the stresses and realise that due to life’s experiences, we all cope differently.
But find the balance and you will be in control.
